గ్రహ అస్తంగత్వం అంటే ఏమిటి?
A graha is combust — అస్తంగతుడు — when it comes within a certain number of degrees of the Sun and is lost in its glare. Classically it loses much of its strength to give results, and the closer it sits to the Sun's exact degree, the deeper the effect.
ఒక గ్రహం రవికి నిర్ణీత డిగ్రీల లోపలికి వచ్చి, రవి కాంతిలో మునిగిపోతే ఆ గ్రహం అస్తంగతుడు అంటారు. శాస్త్రీయంగా అతను ఫలితాలిచ్చే శక్తిలో చాలా భాగాన్ని కోల్పోతాడు. రవి ఖచ్చిత డిగ్రీకి ఎంత దగ్గరగా ఉంటే అస్తంగత్వం అంత లోతుగా ఉంటుంది.
The commonly used limits are: Moon within about 12 degrees, Mars 17, Mercury 14 when direct and 12 when retrograde, Jupiter 11, Venus 10 direct and 8 retrograde, Saturn 15. Combustion is judged by degrees from the Sun, not by houses — a graha in the adjacent sign can still be combust if it falls inside the limit.

Rahu and Ketu cannot be combust. They are shadow points with no physical body, so there is nothing for the Sun's rays to overwhelm.

Mercury never travels more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, so nearness to the Sun is its natural condition rather than an affliction. A wide Sun–Mercury conjunction still forms Budhaditya yoga and can give intelligence and skill; it is only deep combustion, close to the exact degree, that undermines it.

The classical image is of someone scorched by the sun: present, but not able to act at full strength. A combust graha weakens the matters it signifies and the houses it rules, so combust Venus is read for delays in marriage and comfort, combust Jupiter for children, wisdom and guidance. In muhurta, marriages are avoided while Venus or Jupiter is combust for exactly this reason.
