షడ్బలం అంటే ఏమిటి?
Shadbala is the six-fold measure of a planet's strength in Vedic astrology. Six separate sources of strength — position, direction, time, motion, natural rank and aspects — are counted in virupas and added together, and the total is compared with the minimum each planet needs. A planet above its minimum can deliver what its houses and lordships promise.
షడ్బలం అంటే వేద జ్యోతిషంలో ఒక గ్రహానికి ఉన్న ఆరు రకాల బలం. స్థానం, దిక్కు, కాలం, గమనం, సహజ స్థాయి, దృష్టులు — ఈ ఆరు బలాలను విరూపాలలో లెక్కించి కలుపుతారు. ఆ మొత్తాన్ని ఆ గ్రహానికి కావలసిన కనీస బలంతో పోలుస్తారు. కనీసం కంటే ఎక్కువ బలం ఉన్న గ్రహం తన భావాలు, ఆధిపత్యాలు సూచించే ఫలితాన్ని ఇవ్వగలదు.
Sthana bala is strength from position — the planet's dignity in the signs, the vargas and the house groups. Dig bala is directional: Jupiter and Mercury are strongest in the 1st house, the Sun and Mars in the 10th, Saturn in the 7th, the Moon and Venus in the 4th, and each has none in the house opposite. Kala bala comes from the time of birth — day or night, the lunar fortnight, the lords of the year, month, weekday and hour. Chesta bala comes from motion, and a retrograde planet receives the full 60 virupas. Naisargika bala is a fixed natural order: Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Mercury, Mars, Saturn. Drik bala is the net effect of the benefic and malefic aspects the planet receives.

Each bala is counted in virupas, and 60 virupas make one rupa. The totals are judged against a minimum for each planet, in rupas: Sun 5, Moon 6, Mars 5, Mercury 7, Jupiter 6.5, Venus 5.5 and Saturn 5. Mercury needs the most. Rahu and Ketu are not given Shadbala at all.

Several of the six depend on things that change within minutes: dig bala depends on the house a planet falls in, which depends on the lagna, and kala bala depends on the hour of birth. That is why Shadbala is computed from exact planetary positions and birth time, with software such as Jagannatha Hora, rather than looked up from a table. A strong planet is one able to deliver what it signifies and rules — which may be difficult as well as good. A strong lord of a difficult house gives that house's results strongly. Shadbala answers how much a planet can do; the houses it rules, its nature and its dasha say what that will be and when.
