What is Vimshottari Dasha?
వింశోత్తరి దశ అంటే ఏమిటి?
Vimshottari dasha is the timing system most widely used in Vedic astrology. It divides a notional lifespan of 120 years among the nine grahas, and the sequence a person starts in is fixed by the nakshatra the Moon occupied at birth. Where a chart says what may happen, the dasha says when.
వేద జ్యోతిషంలో కాలనిర్ణయానికి ఎక్కువగా వాడే పద్ధతి వింశోత్తరి దశ. 120 సంవత్సరాల ఆయుష్షును తొమ్మిది గ్రహాలకు పంచుతుంది. జన్మ సమయంలో చంద్రుడు ఉన్న నక్షత్రాన్ని బట్టి ఏ దశ నుండి మొదలవుతుందో నిర్ణయమవుతుంది. జాతకం ఏమి జరగవచ్చో చెబితే, దశ ఎప్పుడు జరుగుతుందో చెబుతుంది.
The 120 years, and how they are divided
Each graha holds a fixed share: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. They always run in that order, and the total is 120. The order never changes; only the starting point does.

Why the Moon decides where you start
Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of the nine grahas. Whichever nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth, its lord is the dasha running at birth — and how far the Moon has travelled through that nakshatra decides how much of that period is already spent. Two people born hours apart can therefore begin life in different dashas.
27 నక్షత్రాలలో ప్రతిదానికీ తొమ్మిది గ్రహాలలో ఒకరు అధిపతి. జన్మ సమయంలో చంద్రుడు ఉన్న నక్షత్రానికి ఎవరు అధిపతో ఆ గ్రహ దశ నడుస్తూ ఉంటుంది. చంద్రుడు ఆ నక్షత్రంలో ఎంత దూరం ప్రయాణించాడో దాన్ని బట్టి ఎంత దశ గడిచిపోయిందో తెలుస్తుంది. అందుకే కొన్ని గంటల తేడాతో పుట్టిన ఇద్దరు వేర్వేరు దశలలో జీవితం మొదలుపెట్టవచ్చు.
Mahadasha, antardasha and the layers below
The main period is the mahadasha. Each is subdivided into nine antardashas in the same sequence and proportion, and those subdivide again into pratyantardashas. A prediction usually needs at least two levels: the mahadasha sets the theme of a long stretch, the antardasha narrows it to months.
ప్రధాన కాలం మహాదశ. ప్రతి మహాదశ అదే క్రమంలో, అదే నిష్పత్తిలో తొమ్మిది అంతర్దశలుగా విభజించబడుతుంది. అవి మళ్ళీ ప్రత్యంతర్దశలుగా విడిపోతాయి. ఫలిత నిర్ణయానికి కనీసం రెండు స్థాయిలు కావాలి — మహాదశ దీర్ఘకాల స్వభావాన్ని చెబితే, అంతర్దశ దాన్ని నెలల స్థాయికి తగ్గిస్తుంది.
What a dasha does not tell you on its own
A dasha shows the timing, not the outcome. What a period delivers depends on the graha's condition in the chart — the houses it rules, its dignity, whether it is combust or aspected — so the same Saturn mahadasha is not the same experience in two different charts. Reading the period without reading the graha is the commonest beginner's error.
దశ కాలాన్ని చూపుతుంది, ఫలితాన్ని కాదు. ఆ కాలం ఏమిస్తుందో ఆ గ్రహ స్థితిని బట్టి ఉంటుంది — అది పాలించే భావాలు, బలం, అస్తంగత్వం, దృష్టులు. అందుకే ఒకే శని మహాదశ రెండు జాతకాలలో ఒకేలా ఉండదు. గ్రహాన్ని చూడకుండా దశను చదవడం — ఇదే మొదట్లో అందరూ చేసే పొరపాటు.
